Meet Bill Brodie

This week is National Lorry Week, an awareness week created by the Road Haulage Association (RHA) to highlight the vital, and often unseen, role that the logistics industry plays in our lives and showcase the huge variety of career opportunities within the sector.

As one of the UK’s largest port groups and pioneers of portcentric logistics, PD Ports is championing the sector as an innovative, inclusive and sustainable industry full of amazing opportunities.

We recently caught up with Bill Brodie, LGV Driver at PD Ports, currently in his 41st year of driving and his third year of employment at PD Ports.to get some insight in to the world of a driver.

Working away from home Monday to Friday, Bill enjoys travelling and says these hours aren’t as bad as one would think, despite travelling anything from 600km to 750km a day!

“There’s a lot of variation to the job,” said Bill. “It can actually open doors to travelling to new places and meeting new people.”

Bill loves the travelling the UK and has covered the majority of it, right from lands’ end to John O’Groats, and says there’s never a dull moment in his job, even after 41 years.

Bill chose PD Ports as it stands out from other companies in the industry, saying, ‘’PD Ports offers their drivers a great package, in my opinion. You get a good uniform, good holidays, and a great pension contribution too.’’

When asked what advice he would give to young people looking to get into the industry, he said, ‘’You have got to be positive and open minded about the role, you get to visit a lot of different places and every day is an opportunity to meet new people.’’

He also has some strong advice for industry leaders, ‘’There’s certainly lots of positive developments happening in the industry and it’s heading in the right direction with the simplifying of licences, for example. There’s still a way to go, however, and we need to ensure we’re giving young people the experience and opportunity to be aware of the industry.

The industry gets a lot of bad press, but they are positives too, and it’s important to share them.’’
