To mark National Apprenticeship Week we met with Callum Foster, PD Ports’ Insurance Administrator Apprentice. Callum joined PD Ports in November 2021 and will be experiencing a blend of education, along with professional experience at PD Ports.
Now studying college alongside working at PD Ports, Callum spoke to us about his role, the support he is offered, and what it’s like to be an apprentice at PD Ports.
How are you progressing with your apprenticeship at PD Ports?
My apprenticeship is progressing well, I am continuously learning and growing in confidence in my role every day. I have completed tasks in many different areas of Insurance helping to expand my knowledge & experience.
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I wanted something different and new from what I had experienced before, and undertaking an apprenticeship offered that. It was the opportunity to earn a qualification whilst learning on the job that really appealed to me.
What sort of tasks do you deal with on a daily basis?
I create files relating to incidents ensuring all correspondence and paperwork are correct and in order. I do this by printing off anything related to the incident and putting the documents together to create the file. I monitor the department emails each day, sending and replying to emails obtaining and requesting required information that will help in the preparation of files. I attend meetings with my colleagues to help me gain knowledge and experience, during these meetings I take notes that could prove useful in a case. I also participate in team discussions regarding any changes in legislation and its impact on operations.
What do you most like about your role?
I like how no two days are the same, there is always something new happening which requires you to be switched on. It is an interesting role which requires me to interact with many people from different departments and professions, this is something I especially enjoy. I also have a great team in my office who are very supportive which is always a bonus.
What support did you receive as an apprentice?
I have received lots of support from my fellow colleagues to my manager and from the college of which my apprenticeship is assigned to, the college has a dedicated portal where I can check my progress, find resources or request help. There are numerous people on hand should I require any assistance and I have regular meetings to ensure I am doing well, if I require any assistance or to offer any additional training which may be of benefit.
How do you see your career developing in the future?
My aspirations after my apprenticeship are to begin a successful and rewarding role within PD Ports where I can continue to expand my knowledge and become a key member of the team. I hope for the chance to progress within the organisation whilst seizing any opportunities that come my way.
Why did you choose PD Ports?
PD Ports is a renowned company with lots of history and an excellent reputation, they play a big part in the industry of my local town. Along with the support shown to apprentices and the opportunity to be a part of something so vast, the opportunity to join such an organisation was one that I couldn’t pass up.
