Meet David Morgan

We’re passionate about our team and helping them to develop their skills right here with us at PD Ports. So, when one of our apprentices was Highly Commended as Learner of the Year at the ECI Training and Development Awards, we thought we’d catch up with him to find out exactly what makes him such a great asset to our business.

You’re currently studying for a Level 3 BTEC in engineering, what does a typical day involve?

Every day is different but regularly get involved with servicing tasks, always with a tradesman as a mentor. I could be looking at anything from chargers, to Terminal Tractors or reach stackers which are used on the dock daily so need frequent servicing.

A service consists of checking over the machine for any defects, always making sure the machine is in safe working order. We always do detailed checks on the core components such as brake pads which can wear more easily and quickly, as well as regularly changing filters and the oil in machinery.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love the variety involved – from the machines to the people! Every member of the PD team has different experiences and skills so there’s always someone on hand to help you, I hope to one day be the person younger members of the team turn to.

Recently I had the opportunity to rebuild a rotation motor for a rotation stacker which was really interesting. I was able to learn new skills through processes that I wouldn’t encounter through a standard service.

What are the main challenges you face?

As each task is different, it’s sometimes difficult to adapt to the job at hand and make sure that I not only understand what’s involved, but make sure everything around it from tools to safety has been considered.

What brought you to engineering?

Engineering is a skill for life and as technology and manufacturing develops, as it has for over one hundred years already, there’ll always be something new to learn.

Who has supported you on your journey so far?

My friends and family have been really supportive. A few members of my family are engineers, so it’s always been something I’ve had an interest in.

NETA has also been a huge support throughout my apprenticeship and career so far. It was a massive shock to find out I’d been shortlisted for the Learner of the Year award and it was a huge confidence boost and I’m so grateful for faith both they and PD Ports have in me.
