The significance of modal shift

As a business that has long advocated for rail freight, investing millions in infrastructure and services to provide the most cost-effective, efficient and sustainable solutions, PD Ports was delighted to contribute to a recent edition of the Sunday Telegraph to discuss the growing significance of modal shift from road to rail.

Operating over 25 intermodal services a week from a dedicated intermodal rail terminal at Teesport, plus a number of freight services for bulk cargo, PD Ports’ rail offering saves a staggering 400,000 road movements annually – removing trucks from congested road networks and alleviating issues currently faced as a result of a significant shortage in HGV drivers.

In the Sunday Telegraph article, our Chief Commercial Officer, Geoff Lippitt, discussed how Teesport is the only UK port currently working with all four major rail freight operators to drive the Green Industrial Revolution and how a further 50% growth in rail services is anticipated over the next decade.

“At PD Ports we currently operate in excess of 25 rail services a week, carrying cargo to and from the River Tees and servicing supply chains in key industrial locations nationwide,” said Geoff.

“We’re delighted to see a rapid increase in the amount of customers realising the environmental and cost benefits associated with rail freight and will continue to seize the opportunity to create more resilient supply chains, reduce carbon emissions and deliver on the levelling up agenda for the North.”
